Help WSO protect your rights!

The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) needs your support.  For 27 years, WSO has been a strong voice advocating on behalf of all Canadian Sikhs and is a respected human rights body.  WSO is a non-profit organization that does not accept any government funding, but rather is funded entirely by our supporters.
WSO’s mandate focuses on three overarching areas:  education, law and media. At any given time, several important projects are ongoing in each of those three areas.  For example:

  1.  Education:  Seminars on human rights issues and seminars on the Sikh faith are regularly presented to the Sikh community, to businesses, and to elected officials in all levels of government.  WSO launched the Khalra Centre for Human Rights this year in memory of S. Jaswant Singh Khlara.  WSO will also be offering an expanded internship program for students in 2012, providing valuable and practical experience to the Sikh community’s future leaders.
  2. Legal:  our legal team is currently advocating on behalf of Sikhs across Canada who have had their human rights violated.  For example:
  • WSO recently worked with the BC Sheriff Services in creating an accommodation policy for Sikh turbans in custody.
  • WSO  continues to advocate on behalf of Sikhs who face issues while wearing the kirpan in schools, universities and workplaces across the country.
  • Currently, efforts are ongoing to provide an exemption to dastaar wearing Sikhs from hard hat requirements on work sites.

3. Media:  Our media team regularly monitors various media and responds to stories that impact the Sikh community in a courteous and professional    manner.  Several opinion pieces by WSO members have been published in mainstream publications such as the Georgia Straight and the Toronto Star to provide the Sikh perspective on important issues.  WSO also contributes to a regular column  in the Ottawa Citizen.

These valuable programs rely on the community’s support and funding to continue. The WSO is impacting change, and your support and assistance helps ensure their sustainability and continuity.

Donations of any size are welcome however the most valuable contribution is signing up for an automated monthly donation.  This ensures our programs are sustained and supported all year long.
